CAPRI LXXI
The relation between the work of Krijn De Koning and Gertjan Kocken lies in their analytical interest in the characteristics of space and location. In other words, in the site-specific context of 'place': Our conditioned behaviour is undermind by providing new frames that expose specific (visual) aspects or present them in an unexpected manner.
Kocken translates this into the 'realistic' two dimensional surface of the photographic image and De Koning into minimalistic three-dimensional sculptures.
Krijn de Koning designed a mural painting for CAPRI, involving the walls, ceiling and notorious pedestals. The exhibition space itself is both denied in its function and confirmed in its specific details; transformed into a spatial art work. This mural will also serve as a frame-setting for Gertjan Kocken's large scale photographs. Kocken will present some of his prints from “Iconoclasm”, a series about the visual remains of religious art works that were deliberately damaged during the Protestant attacks against christian imagery of the pre-reformation times.
